Brazilian police have launched a fresh crackdown on a dangerous drugs gang after they threatened to orchestrate a "World Cup of Terror" next year.
The First Capital Command, better known as the PCC, were recorded by police on secret wire taps making the threats to next summer's tournament, according to Sky News.
Many of the criminals involved in the cartel are making plans while still locked up in prison, and the gang's membership is thought to be in the thousands.
But police chiefs say they are confident that they can put a stop to any attacks on the thousands of football fans that will descend on Brazil in June - including those games in the PCC's main stomping ground, Sao Paolo.
Police chief Fabio Barbeiro described how his officers were monitoring gang members at all times, and insisted that the cartel's targets were their rivals, not ordinary football fans.
Officers have closed down PCC branch offices, seizing mobile phones, cash, bullets and accounting documents.
100 police officers were murdered in the last year alone in the fight against the PCC, which is run by Marcos Willians Herbas Camacho - or Marcola. He has been in prison since 1993.
But former gang member and drug trafficker Daniel Martins - who is now a reformed missionary - told Sky News he did not think his former cartel would attack the World Cup, because it would "look bad for them".
His comments come after England boss Roy Hodgson last week moved to calm the fears of players and fans over recent civil unrest in Brazil.
He said security staff were concerned, but insisted they could cope.
