Bomb hoax at Dubai airport puts transit passenger behind bars

DUBAI// A drunken transit passenger called the police from a hotel room and informed them that a bomb was about to explode at Dubai International Airport, a court heard on Monday.

The Indian defendant S S, 36, was passing through Dubai to another destination, which was not mentioned in court records. While waiting for the departure date of his plane, he checked in into a hotel and started consuming liquor.

On the night of December 31, he used the phone in his hotel room to call the Dubai Police’s operations room. Claiming to be a Pakistani, he said he knew of a bomb in an undisclosed area of the Dubai Airport that would soon explode.
Police tracked the call to the hotel and arrested the passenger.

SS, who was still drunk at the time of his arrest, confessed that the report he made was baseless and there was no bomb at the airport.

He was charged with filing a false report and with consuming alcohol without a licence.

Court records did not say whether the airport needed to be evacuated after the threat was made.

At the court on Monday, SS confessed to both charges. He was sentenced to one month in jail for the bomb threat and fined Dh2,000 for consuming alcohol without a license.
